Registration now open for July 26 - 27 conference featuring workshops and scientific sessions on autism care through the life span

Building on the success of last year’s first annual National Conference for Families and Professionals, Autism Speaks is pleased to announce that registration is now open for this year’s program, Treating the Whole Person with Autism: Care Across the Lifespan.

Parents, healthcare professionals and educators are invited to attend this family-friendly conference, to be held in Columbus, Ohio, on July 26 and 27. It is a partnership between Autism Speaks, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The scientific sessions and hands-on workshops will feature new approaches to care that combine behavioral and medical therapies and supports to help children, adolescents and adults with autism lead healthy and successful lives.

This year’s keynote speakers include pediatrician Paul Carbone, M.D., and special education expert Stephen Shore, Ed.D. Dr. Carbone is author of Autism Spectrum Disorders: What Every Parent Needs to Know. His practice is part of the University of Utah’s Neurobehavior H.O.M.E. Program. There, he provides comprehensive services across the lifespan for people with autism and other developmental disabilities.

Dr. Shore, an assistant professor of education at Adelphi University, wrote the best-selling Beyond the Wall: Personal Experiences with Autism and Asperger Syndrome. Diagnosed with autism as a child, Dr. Shore was nonverbal until age 4, with doctors recommending him for institutionalization. His current research at Adelphi focuses on matching evidence-based “best practices” to the needs of those with autism. As an international speaker, Dr. Shore addresses the challenges of education, relationships, employment and advocacy for individuals on the autism spectrum.

Conference registration information can be found here; program updates here. For further questions, please email ATN@AutismSpeaks.org. Professionals interested in continuing education credit for attending the conference should contact Cory D’Ambrosio at Cory.DAmbrosio@nationwidechildrens.org.

We look forward to seeing you in Columbus!
