The United States and the European Union will link government-backed initiatives to understand brain development and function

March 20, 2014

The United States and the European Union have announced a formal partnership to speed and improve the results of their recently launched brain initiatives. The collaboration will involve the US Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative and the EU’s Human Brain Project.

President Obama launched the BRAIN Initiative last May with $100 million in initial funding. The EU followed six months later with €1 billion ($1.4 billion) for its brain project.

“[The brain] is something that has defied understanding. You can’t imagine a more important scientific cooperation,” said US Representative Chaka Fattah (D-PA) in announcing the collaboration. The aim is to improve research efficiency and minimize overlap between the projects. Read more about the collaboration in Nature
