Autism Speaks most heartily congratulates autism researcher Elaine Hsiao for making Forbes' 2013 list of 30 Under 30 in Science and Healthcare.
In 2009, Dr. Hsiao launched her career in autism research as part of Autism Speaks' first class of Dennis Weatherstone predoctoral fellows. She has continued her groundbreaking research at the California Institute of Technology under the mentorship of Paul Patterson and with the support of an Autism Speaks Suzanne and Bob Wright Trailblazer research grant.
Dr. Hsiao and Dr. Patterson have pioneered scientific understanding of the role that prenatal and intestinal inflammation play in the development of autism and its symptoms. They are currently testing a probiotic therapy that has shown promise in reducing autism-like behaviors in mouse models of autism. Their related research papers have been featured among Autism Speaks annual "Top Ten Advances in Autism Research" in both 2012 and 2013.
