A new study published today in Pediatrics reports that a large proportion of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) share traits similar to children with autism.  Among 242 children with ADHD more than 18% were found to have “autistic traits” though they did not meet a formal diagnosis for autism. These children had significant emotional, social, and cognitive impairments as well as challenges at home and in school that are common in children with autism.

“ADHD, like autism, is a spectrum disorder and what this research shows us is that these two spectrums overlap,” said Michael Rosanoff, Autism Speaks’ associate director of public health research. “By looking at the commonalities between autism and ADHD, we may be able to uncover common biological pathways and more importantly, improved treatment approaches for one or both conditions.” Read more about the study here.
