Opportunities include the Meixner Postdoctoral Fellowships in Translational Research and the Weatherstone Predoctoral Fellowships

August 16, 2013

Autism Speaks is pleased to announce the open application period for the Meixner Postdoctoral Fellowships in Translational Research and the Dennis Weatherstone Predoctoral Fellowships.

Autism Speaks fellowships support the development of promising new scientists with outstanding autism research projects and the mentorship of leading researchers in the field.

“We believe the investment in autism research training will grow exponentially as fellows assume independent investigator roles in academic and research institutions around the country and the world,” says Autism Speaks Vice President of Scientific Review and Operations Anita Miller Sostek.

Meixner Postdoctoral Fellowships in Translational Research
The estate of Charles Meixner has generously funded the Autism Speaks’ Translational Research Initiative with the goal of advancing delivery of products and services that improve life for those with autism. An initial distribution of $1.75 million is supporting an annual class of postdoctoral fellowships in translational research, continuing a successful program that began in 2011. (More information about this generous gift here.)

This fellowship supports well-qualified postdoctoral researchers pursuing training and research in the field of translational autism science. Successful applicants will detail projects that bridge basic laboratory research and behavioral or biomedical clinical research. Their training plan must include significant mentoring in both basic and clinical research. Successful projects will accelerate the translation of basic scientific discoveries into novel and more effective methods or products for diagnosing, preventing or treating autism.

Dennis Weatherstone Predoctoral Fellowships
Applications are also open for the sixth year of the Dennis Weatherstone Predoctoral Fellowships. Autism Speaks invites applications from predoctoral students aiming to pursue careers in autism research. The Fellows will work with mentors who are leading scientists in the field. Autism Speaks established the Weatherstone fellowships with a generous gift from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. The fellowship is named for the foundation’s first chairman, Dennis Weatherstone. A distinguished financier, Weatherstone and his wife shared a deep, personal commitment to supporting autism research. Lady Weatherstone continues to actively support the career development of Autism Speaks Weatherstone fellows.

To facilitate research collaboration, the Weatherstone program includes group interaction and an annual meeting with the Weatherstone family and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. Find more information on the Weatherstone program here. Access the full request for applications here. (Deadlines listed at the bottom of the page.)
